Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a cancer that occurs within the bile ducts and can affect the bile ducts within the liver or the main bile duct that drains bile from the gallbladder and liver into the small bowel. Bile duct cancer may not cause any symptoms or can cause jaundice (the whites of your eyes or your skin turn yellow, itchy skin, dark urine and pale stools), weight loss or abdominal pain. The investigations and treatment of bile duct cancer will depend on where the cancer is in the bile duct, the size of the cancer, if the cancer has spread outside the bile duct and a person’s general health.
