Hiatus hernia

A hiatus hernia is when part of the stomach moves up into the chest.

It is a very common problem and not always associated with symptoms. The presence of a hiatus hernia does predispose to acid reflux symptoms because the integrity of the mechanism at the lower end of the oesophagus, which allows food to pass into the stomach and prevents stomach acid washing back, is affected. The management depends on the symptoms pattern and endoscopy findings. Generally diet, lifestyle and drug therapy can control symptoms but there are surgical options that are occasionally needed.
